Sutherlandia frutescens is regarded as the most profound and multi-purpose of the medicinal plants in Southern Africa. Because of its efficacy as a safe tonic for diverse health conditions it has enjoyed a long history of use by all cultures in Southern Africa. Sutherlandia powerfully assists the body to mobilize its own resources to cope with diverse physical and mental stresses, and it should therefore be more correctly known as an adaptogenic tonic.

The indigenous, folk, and contemporary uses of Sutherlandia include uses as a tonic for enhancing well-being, immune support, longevity, stress, depression and anxiety, wasting from cancer, TB, and AIDS, quality-of-life tonic for cancers, HIV/AIDS and TB, appetite stimulant in wasted patients, but not in healthy people, influenza, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME Syndrome and Yuppie Flu, viral hepatitis, asthma and bronchitis, type 2 diabetes, mild to moderate hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, peptic ulcer, gastritis, and reflux oesophagitis, hot flushes and irritability in menopause.

Chemistry and Pharmacology:
Highly bioactive compounds have been found in Sutherlandia. L-canavanine is a non-protein amino acid with documented antiviral, anti-bacterial, anti fungal and anticancer activities. It is also a selective inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase. Pinitol has clinical application in treating the wasting syndrome. GABA is a natural neurotransmitter that gives a profound sense of well-being.

Suggested Dosage:
One to two capsules/tablets twice a day after meals, unless otherwise directed. AIDS and cancer patients should take Sutherlandia on an ongoing basis under supervision of a health care professional. Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Contra-Indications & Cautions:
The dosage of anti-hypertensive and anti-diabetic medication may need to be reduced and preliminary laboratory studies suggest there may be possible interactions with anti-retroviral drugs. As with many common natural supplements (e.g. garlic, ginkgo, ginseng), Sutherlandia may be implicated in prolonging bleeding time. Sutherlandia should not be taken while on anti-coagulants such as heparin and warfarin, and it is recommended that the use of the product should be stopped two weeks before elective surgery.
Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
